M1A2 Abrams Background

The U.S. deployed M1A2 Abrams tanks during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq and continued using them during the occupation period. Tank Urban Survival Kits were developed in response to threats from RPGs and improvised explosive devices in urban environments. Earlier TUSK upgrades included hull-side reactive armor, hull underside armor, an M2 machine gun above the main gun barrel, infrared cameras for the crew, and an external telephone for communication with accompanying infantry.
